Will TY survive V4 Empty Will TY survive V4

Post  Twinlinked Wed Mar 08, 2017 7:30 pm

What are people's thoughts will TY still be a thing 6 months from now or will V4 rekindle people's interest in WWII and TY become a game people play from time to time.

My hope is that TY has enough of a foot hold that it will stick around d, but I'm wondering what other people think,

For instance as far as I can tell it never took off in Pet, does that mean it won't ever catch on there if it hasn't already?

Just wondering what people think will happen,

I think it will - I think it is to be seen if V4 can eclipse TY at this point. TY is outselling it, and has been a huge success. I think the big question is whether V4 is enough to rekindle FoW, or will it continue to be "same old" for people. Having played V4 a few times, it's much closer to "same old" over "new coolness" - and it just feels like its limited in scope compared to TY, from unit types and mobility options..

Time will tell - I'm keeping both, and planning to move into Bolt Action also...

Truth of the matter is that Midwar isn't going to capture my attention for at least another 6 months, since the Brits and Germans in the Desert won't even be finished being released until July. That, and I primarily play Soviets, which may not see a release until late in the winter (or next year). I worry that midwar got the "Age of Sigmar" treatment where most of the player base got told to play with what we give you for a year, before picking up again.

I also doubt that TY is going away. I do believe that a lot of TY's success stems from the fact that there really isn't a main stream Cold War Mini's game out there. It probably sold like crazy because no one really makes good quality M1 Abrams, and T-72's and Leopards. The game itself is solid (I heavily enjoy it), but it isn't lighting anyone's world on fire or revolutionising the industry or how we play games. TY's success is because it has opened up it's own unique market.

I'm buying into Midwar V4 because I've been playing with the idea of building a Tobruk themed Australians army for over a year now, so this is a good opportunity to do so. But I still am enjoying TY more than FoW.

As for early and late... I really want to see how the conversion works out before making any claims. I'm not entirely convinced that V4 won't break the points balance of both eras. I feel the V4 release is far too soft to allow for a smooth transition into a new edition. It's pretty much here's all the new core rules, we'll deal with how it breaks the game later.

I think mid war will be slow to pick up cause of armies not being done, early war has always been a meh game, late war is going to be a mess until they redo it. It's probably safer to play V3 late war then it will be V4. late war is already a mess any ways with the book balance, its fine if you use the same era book, ie d-day vs d-day, but its broken when you play something like the late late war lists vs early late war.

TY is going to be the new standard i think until they iron out problems with late war, if they don't do things fast they are going to shoot themselves in the foot. When GW released new versions at least the armies were playable, just had to wait a few years for a new list. In V4 my armies are unplayable because there are no lists (fins and soviets).

Huh.... Website updated...

Whereas I'm sure TY will survive Version 4... I'm not entirely convinced FoW will survive Version 4... The online store has reduced... No handy navigation bar on the side (probably a coding error that they'll eventually fix). And all the different nations have only a small link to them...

Disturbingly, Arab-Israeli, Great War, and Vietnam are completely missing from the Online Store Navigation. I did some testing and found that all the hobby articles and "add to cart" window still work if you search for each individual product code... But don't know how I feel about Battlefront's willingness to revive or even continue selling the games...

I'm not sure how well Late and Early war are going to be supported. It looks like Battlefront are double-downing on Midwar... (and they kinda have to since they gutted it).

On the plus side, Forces of War is updated to Version 4, so you can check up the new rules with all my unlocked lists.

I guess the thing about V4 will be how well it plays,

It sounds like maybe TY has a strong enough foot hold too survive, and they are adding a few more NATO lists soon which may bring some new people in,

FoW Nationals is V4 LW with variable points, I'm not sure if that is appealing to people or not..

My question would be....how long will it be before TY starts to fizzel once people get bored with playing it.....and it will happen just like FoW.  In Petawawa there are a few that have bought into TY but many of our players are still in the military and subject to deployments all over the place.  I've been reluctant to buy into TY simply because the product line wasn't complete, rumours about changes and the simple fact that I knew v4 was rolling out.  I made the mistake before, particularly in EW by jumping in, only to have wrestle with significant changes after the fact.  Anyhow, I'm now launching for the 3rd time, into a new version of FoW.  Time will tell whether it takes off or not but eventually (it may take 10 years or more or perhaps less) it too will stagnate............

For the moment, the few of us remaining in Petawawa that are not in Wainwright will be focused on v4 and our upcoming tournament in Jun when I hope many our folks will be back from out west.

Cheers

Bob

I think TY will be like a lot of games, at least for our group, we will play it a lot for a few months until a new rule set comes out for a new game. I don't know how many game systems I own that we only played for a month or so, or only a couple of us got into so it quickly died down.

x-wing we played a lot most people bought stuff, we haven't played it for months, but 6 months from now we will pull it out and play it again, same with warmachine and hordes. Everything goes in spurts, games get dull fast when you are playing the same army vs the same armies and people.

team yankee has a small unit count, not as in what is on the board, but how many different unit types per army. This is good and bad, the good being you don't have to go crazy buying stuff like say germans in ww2. Its more like playing americans, just buy shermans you don't have 6 variations of the same tank all completely different.

The bad, is everyone will figured out what is the most efficient way of dealing with each unit type and min/max armies naturally (we all do this its from years of tournament play). With low variation of model types the game becomes very stagnant. Mind you FOW did the same things, most lists are very similar to each other for the high end tournaments. A late, late war panther army is more popular then a d-day panzer IV army because the tanks are the same price. No-one cares about being reluctant trained vs confident vet, cause when your enemy cant kill you there is no need to do moral tests.

I guess you gotta ask yourself the flowimg question. Are you there to hang with some.friends have a drink or two and push some nicely painted models around and have fun? If yes.. then shit lime min max and torunament lists and all that mean a lot less. Ive had my moderns for 5 years and only now are other ppl getting in bcs now there is a decent ruleset. Same with flames.. its a decent ruleset. Are they perfect ofc not. But im at the point now where if im not having fun playing ill just stop playing.. either that person or if its the system.. stop playing the system.

Den that's a fair point about enjoying playing,

I just find that the game is more fun when a bit of momentum is built up and we get familiar with the units and rules for a given system,

We never got there with WMH and the games were taking too long as an example

@den : Thanks Nigel Stillman for the tips. Razz

(In all seriousness I think we get way to hung up on the particularities of given rulesets when, at the end of the day, we are still chucking dice no matter the rulesets. Sure FoW had lots of novelty lists-like bridge by bridge-but is not like people played them a whole lot. They tended to stick to their main lists most of the time anyways.)

I'm not advocating playing against power gamers, all I mean is that if we play the games more and we are able to learn the rules well we can get more games in in an evening, we used to play 2-3 games each a night of FoW..

When we jump from game to game we never get proficient enough to get a few games in each per night,

I don't mean to say that's a problem, just an observation about ruleset proficiency..

Given my lack of interest in tournaments, I guess I've been a beer and chips guy for a while.

I like these as well. I enjoy tournaments more, because of the different things I see at events.

Unfortunately, campaigns and slow grow are too inconsistent with my schedule. I really liked Warmachine when we all started, but work took a big chunk of that away. Spring is literally right around the corner and once again gaming will take a back seat.
