Saga Anglo-Danes

Post  Coyote on Thu May 04, 2017 10:27 am

Models arrived Tuesday. I assembled 10 warriors (I plan on painting all 20 that came despite only using 16 in my army). Last night I attached the miniatures to painting stands, primed and made some decent progress on painting. I'm going for a simple 3 step of shadow, midtone and highlight. It's somewhat Dallimore but using zenithal highlighting. My trick to painting a motley band is to pick a colour and go down my painting line, randomly applying it to pants or tunic. Once those colours are done all the belts, wood, etc will be painted the same. When the big parts all look different no-one notices that all the belts are the same colour of leather. Plus they were probably all made by the same tanner using the same dyes.

There are two figures that have been cropped out of the image.

Not sure. These guys probably won't be ready to remove from their painting stands. I'm also not sure if I can do that to my wife. My daughter is having a friend over and I would be leaving her to deal with all of that.

Edit: Plus I still have a bunch more guys to assemble.

Aside from basing the boys are done. The next batch will be based prior to painting but I was fast-tracking these guys. I drilled a 16/34" hole in each base and superglued a 1x5mm neodymium magnet. The magnet is slightly thicker than 1mm and so are the bases so it is a perfect it. These guys were a fun bunch to paint without having another details to worry about. I will say that the battle-damage painted onto the shields really helps hide any irregularities from hand-painting them. Started these boys Tuesday, missed Friday for a whiskey tasting at the Officer's Mess of the Governor General's Foot Guard so I can't complain. At this rate I hope to have another 10 warriors finished next week and then I'll decide if I'm going to paint all 10 hearthguard + the warlord in the same week or split them up. The mail should make painting faster but I want to spend more time on the shields. These are more miniatures than I need but I like to paint everything in a package instead of leaving stuff for later.

Busy like beaver. I've also been assembling the rest of the force. The plastic has been good until I've started converting my Hearthguard with Dane Axes. They just give them as hands grasping an axe. I wanted 4 Hearthguard with Dane Axes and 4 with Swords but it wasn't possible from the plastic kit. Anglo-Dane Hearthguard with Spears is probably more realistic but I did glue swords to the belts of them all.

FDB is selling second hand LOTR dwarves (and the rest of the range) for cheap. Someone asked them to try and get rid of their collection for them. The dwarves are even still on spruce

I was able to scavenge enough axes by stealing one from the Dark Age Warriors sprue. It's just not a very user friendly boxed set.

Meanwhile the second batch of Warriors is nearly done. Haha, just kidding, the shields alone will take as much time as I've already spent.

Second batch done.

Started on the last 12

and even started the shields. Really pushing to be done by Friday. Can't have the basing done, waiting on magnets from Ebay.

I've been mostly copying/riffing on LBMS transfers but last night I went off the rails. I'm pretty sure yellow/black hazard stripes are not contemporary to Anglo Danes.

Shields are done, thank goodness. Just the metal, leather, hair and ankle wraps left. Please tell me we are playing Saga this Friday.
