Seriously tempted........

So scouring for a small, skirmish game, where I only need to paint 5-10 models, and I came across this:

I have downloaded the quick start rules, and I thought of giving it a try Friday - anyone interested? If I like the game, I will order a starter force - its only like $55 and it has everything........all you need ever. I like that idea....it also has free campaigns, with upkeep, unit purchasing, etc....seems cool.

I have enough to paint as it is. What happened to Dystopian wars and Warmachine The only new game for me on the horizon is some sort of modern warfare game.

tbh the only faction that has me interested visually is the FCC (who ironically look modern warfare-ish) -- but the rest are little to much early 40k. But on the plus side as I think they use one sculptor for the entire line everything comes together nicely. Ultimately it comes down to the rules though.

MERCS offers a new twist, and literally only 6-7 models.....so minimal investment - Also, I have Warmachine and Dystopian Wars models if anyone wants to try those system - both are unique and VERY fun.

Seems very well received and promising! I will have the quick start rules and cards for a couple factions printed off for Friday - I think Diragi and I are going to test it out.

Infinity seems an option too, as the model count is usually less than 10 models also.........in my reading Infinity and Mercs are basically considered the "best" sci-fi skirmish games currently on the market- Infinity being the larger, more established of the two, with larger model selection and unit types. It also uses more standard I go/you go rules and measuring......

Infinity has the better minis for sure (armoured Shaolin monks with lightsabers/ARs? Yes please) but I likethat Mercs only has 6/7 minis per faction and no collecting rabbit hole to fall into.

MERCS mechanics are more straight forward, and they have the "unlimited range" on all weapons which I like- no reason a rifle cant fire across a 4' play space at 28mm scale, not just drop out of the air at 24". It's bonuses to hit a close range that I like- its a different approach.

Well, Game 1 vs Duane was interesting........and very cool! I want to try another soon, with a different faction to give it a go. I also did more reading on Infinity (as their models are boss!) and I found this:

Interestingly Infinity is usually played using 10-16 miniatures. It is a Skirmish game, you wont find massive armies here, just a firefight between very specialized commandos. So, like Mercs its low model count and seeing as the rules and army lists are freely available they won't cost you anything for Infinity.

May have to try the Infinity rules.....

I think I'd be willing to try infinity just to paint some of the gorgeous models. There was a preorder on Wayland for a warrior with a huge hammer. I'd almost buy just that model to paint, regardless of rules.

Hmm... infinity would be getting away from the cheap and cheerful idea of mercs. Even if we do infinity proxies for mercs it would be still be pricey as you would have to buy single minis that work....

Hopefully the rules are good enough to play (infinity).

Using the free online "EZArmy" on the inifinty site - my start box is 155pts - and they suggest 150pt games for newbs - so perfect!

not yet- but my 6 models are 155pts - so a "full" National tourney list is 300pts- so what - 10-12 models?! Still played on 4x4 - but you can play on larger.....and still low models count- AND only $37.95 for a starter (6 models) so cheaper than MERCS. Add to that the fact that all the rules, army lists, etc are complete and FREE.........

Infinity rules are more complex, but you can stage the complexity....so I am keen to give it a go.

Assembled and primed (with some parts basecoated) of the 12 models. I think the models make one list of 198 and one list of 153 ( maybe one large one of 340 pts). I still haven't read up on the force creation rules.
