This will effectively erase any likely chance that US players will come to play. I get it's the Canadian Nationals, and we need a large venue in Canada. This country is too big and no one travels to events enough outside of their comfort zone to play in a two day event. We will get Montreal, Kingston/Belleville area, maybe some from Toronto.
Just the hotel and venue choice is enough to doom this before it really get's a legitimate shot.....you know the numbers you 'need' to get this off the ground and going into it with an attitude of "if we don't get enough players we just cancel the event" That says to me there is ZERO commitment, either be all in or all out. Let's say you get 36 people, which would be AWESOME by the way....but is that still short of the number required to get the event off the ground? What then? We turn those players away and you LOSE them for any other event you run in the future if they are outside our group of regulars, the OMG's, Pet Minis, FdB crowd from Gatineau and the Devils.

'Operation Futility' is in full effect, I wish there was some more we could do to improve the odds of us (Canadians) actually hosting a decent event that US players will take serious enough to travel to. Don't fool yourself, we need their numbers.....I WILL do whatever I can with all the great contacts we made at Historicon to get some guys south of the border to come up here for this. The website needs work, rather than have a calendar that has all the information or random table shots of a few FoW games in progress, how about trying to sell the venue. Pictures of Ottawa, things for the wife and kids to do.......like all the museums we have, including WAR MUSEUM!! You've stuck it downtown but there is no information about anything useful. I know it's been pointed out that there are NO 'good' weekends, but this might as well be on Christmas Day. It's the last weekend before kids head back to school, it's one short month after Historicon, where a lot of players travel from all over to get to. It's not too late to revamp and come up with a new plan of attack........I'll outline my thoughts in a second and we can have a discussion on what everyone thinks. I've NEVER posted anything like this before and I am NOT doing it by any means to slam any individual or be negative about hosting a large event. After what we have seen in the past at other events and a failed attempt at having a Nationals of our own......we need a better effort this time around. Because if this doesn't fly, you will kill a chance of ever being looked at again.

PROS AND CONS
+Ottawa (good city, lots to do)
+it'll be better than the last Nationals (18 players)
+long weekend makes it great for out of area players to travel
+great deal on the hotel rooms!! ($120 Studio w/King) ($130 2xDouble Beds w/ pullout sofa bed)
+clean, well lit venue means happy and comfortable players

-player numbers control whether or not venue will get covered to host the event
-lack of interesting things on the webpage to 'attract' players
-the dates will KILL a lot of interest due to family schedule
-same weekend as another major event over the border
-no doubles or even open gaming to meet and greet other players from outside areas
-could have rented hall with tables and still had great venue and less pressure to 'fill' registration
-not enough break time in schedule for meals, not much close by (Subway and Tim Hortons)
-parking costs for some will make this an expensive two day event

something like deciding on which room we need a month or two before the event? we should have a good idea on numbers by then,

it would suck to have to cancel the event if the registration was good, but not good enough for the giant room at the mariott..

What's in it for the venue? Why would they hold a massive spot only for us to potentially bail at the last minute?

IMHO the best we would be able to do (if there was low attendance) would be to take the loss and close off part of the hall so we don't look like idiots.

Or more realistically build an event up from scratch which evolves into a 'nationals' after a couple of years.

It may be acceptable to the venue if we give them two months notice

Some venues will allow you to book a space and conform 2 months out

Im not we might loose a deposit of a dew hundred but that is the risk you take

If this is part of the negotiation up front it may not be an issue at all

Well, it's settled for me.

My step-brother's wedding is August 31, in Kingston. Jen is talking about making it a weekend, as our anniversary is August 30. So looks like I am out for the event.

Let me know what I can do to help out lads, but I won't be in town it looks like.

ANNOUNCEMENT: On September 25th, 2013 we made an announcement that Game Summit was merging into Toy & Game Expo this year. Today, we're excited to announce that Game Summit is going to remain a separate event in the hands of new management: Thierry Brunet and Sebastien Hebert, owners of Boutique FDB, have stepped forward to take over the Game Summit brand and ensure the annual events continue while keeping the same structure and appeal for all avid gamers!

They plan on hosting their first Game Summit event on September 27 and 28, 2014 at Palais des Congrès de Gatineau. We will be working with them to ensure a smooth transition. More details to come!

This is great news, but it is also a major event, less than a month after the Nationals?!?!

Sounds like FdB would have more players and Summit would have more to offer in the way of a large venue and more going on around it. Duane is right, it looks like there are too many Devils that are going to be busy. I just really want them to make the right choice, and I think if they jumped in and talked about it with all the major players (Bfront, Pet, FdB) they have a shot at a great event for Nationals without having to drop a shit ton of money on a venue on their own.

with a venue the size that GS will be at i bet that they could get 20 tables set asside for both days to be dedicated to a FoW nationals event..

that would be pretty sick having nationals at GS..

Given the number of people that will likely be able to attent the first event, say 20-40 people it might be better to have it linked with another event, at least for the first year..

That has to happen because of the venue cost. If we don't have at least 50 come that Date, the event is called off because the funds to run it wont exist.
