I might be all done..
.. with MMOs. In the past 6 months I have tried 7 MMOs. Most recently resubbed to WOW for a month to see.. playing hearthstone made me miss what I remembered to be a decent game.. but I hate to sound like everyone else, but my huntard has been simplified all the way down to needing only 4 buttons. ALl pets can have growl, etc.
I like the idea of MMOs but I guess the no risk is kinda making it not fun. If I suck at wow (and really, all you have to do is quest and dungeon and you get gear) time will make me 'awesomeTM' In a game like war thunder or hearthstone or Elite or BF4 (games I play now) if I screw up I don't advance. In ELITE I lose ships and money if I screw up. In HS, even if I have awesome cards, I make a wrong move and its done.
Who knows.. I think I am at the stage where I can play a few games here and there rather than the good ole days of sitting down to a marathon session of one game. I have no regrets in any of those games (maybe wildstar.. I only played it three weeks.. but it has 49.99... ) because they kept me entertained for their money cost. Is there any game on the horizon I should care about? I was thinking DAOC sequel, but I might just be thinking back to DAOC with rose tinted goggles (like my latest sub of wow). I have no compulsion to play EVE again now that ELITE is out, but its not really an MMO, its a SP game that you can co-op with friends with, or its a free for all PVP game, and you can toggle in between. WoT is basically a fun shooter. WoWarships I am looking forward to, but isn't an MMO obv. If I had more time I would play DCS world online, but I suck ass at flying and would get shot down by any noob on the map

Re: I might be all done..
there isn't really anything on the horizon that is going to break the mold, its just more of the same. I'm enjoying single players games more myself because they are more challenging and more interesting story.
Re: I might be all done..
Destiny is the best of single player and mmo - and its a shooter so its an hour or two of action, then you can stop - no reason to play for hours.
Its working well for me right now, with my limited time...

I loved destiny. My only issue with it, was a a massive lack of content. If it had triple the planets and double the missions per existing planet it would be great I think. Right now it just feels like the first part of a great game.
I just resubbed to WoW again with the GF and am having fun with everything changed.
I can sort of understand Dennis' point about the game, but in reality the 'simplifying' of the game didnt do much.
Almost every clas really only used 3-5 abilities ever. The only exception to that was raiding where you really needed to push your skill level and used a lot more of your skills. Same is still true now (just read up on raid dps rotations in WoD and you'll see what I mean).
I find wow is a lot more like Vanilla wow now and that makes me happy. While rewards are more plentiful, all the best stuff is very hard to achieve, just like the old days.

the only games I have time for these days are WoT and BF4..

A while back I found myself contemplating the same question ... for shits and giggles I brainstormed all of the MMORPGs that I had played over the years.
The problem is twofold:
1. You will likely never be in the same place -- where your time is unlimited but your cash is not. DAoC had small / stable servers -- heck I was in the same guild for the whole time I was subbed. We had tons of guild events like PL nights because you knew people would pay you back. With the massive instancing in modern MMORPGs you have no idea if you will run into another player again (let alone group with them).
2. Let's face it games are completely different these days ; and seem to be chasing the instant gratification / reward trinket path (ie: learning from WoW) instead of the long play (like EvE).
- Storyline / Quest based questing: shit for grouping, hitting max cap mean moving to a different grind based game. No sitting in a dungeon and pulling mobs for an afternoon chatting away with random people
- Smaller groups: now you can get away with playing w/ just your clique... no forced grouping with other people when you had to find 6/8 people.
- Arena PvP: What's (is/was) so compelling about PvP in DaoC and EVE was the leaders and elite players. If you knew some elite gank group was roaming around you were going to get rolled unless the zerg got its act together. Now there's no rivalries, just enemies that are just like you just in different looking armour. Now there's not as much skill advantage ... just gear.
- risk adverse companies: You know if your MMORPG has a good single player then people will at least buy it -- maybe not sub but if you have a sandbox experience then it's way more risky.

Well said Duane, and I have even tried a few of these.. like Darkfall.. which was really exciting to go outside of town because you could get smoked at any time and lose your stuff. You couldnt pan behind you with the camera so if you were gathering resources, you had no idea if someone was sneaking up on you. SOund travelled so far, and the big abilities made sounds, so lets say you are off teh beaten path a bit chopping wood, you PRAY some stealther wasnt going on a treasure hunt run your way and can hear teh chop of wood. Even my guild getting our first ship, and going out to farm fish for exp and loot, and coming across some poor schmuck alone on his boat. We ganked him and stole his boat.
Even how awesomeley fun this game sounds (and it was def. fun, the first three months) it devolved into huge power blocs like in EVE.. where all the conquerable towns were taken, and if you werent a big guild or alliance, you could siege and win, but they would come back and roll you if they put a call to arms out to all their players and take it all back.
Maybe what I should do cure myself of this once and for all is resub to DAOC, UO and maybe AC. Then I won;t have feel-good memories of those games anymore and can finally get the shackle off my back. I mena, I'm tempted to install GW2 purely because 'i already paid the box price, no sub fee' I need help

Immensely satisfying is a very apt description for Destiny. Just loses content too quick. By if two of yiu play I'll jump back in for a bit.
