Napoleonics Corner: Here's what I have Empty Napoleonics Corner: Here's what I have

Post  Matt Varnish Tue Jul 22, 2014 1:43 am

Alright so I was able to finally get my models out of my box (magnets were mighty strong, had to use a hobby knife to pry the bases off the magnetic strips)

If I go with 40x30mm basing, with 3x2 inf models per base, I have: 16 well painted line infantry bases, with 4 of these being colour parties.. so I can make small 4 base units or larger (I think French is 4 or 6, unlike the 8's for British for example) and then I have another 8 stands of greatcoat wearing French infantry with two more command. I was debating running these only 3 stands per base and making them light infantry..

Cavalry: currently based as-is (2 models per stand) I have 3 units of 8 bases (some of these are based on 1 inch square bases) or I rebase them to 3 per base of 40x30mm in which case I have: 2 units of 6 bases, 1 unit of 4. This is NOT including the Hussars I bought, which are 12 models.. so either 6 of 2 models or 4 of 3. To get more mileage, I'll probably go two per horse base...

Guns: I have what I will call Empire Great Cannons, because that is what they look like Smile x 11 and 2 small barrel ones (howitzer?). I figure a battery of 6 guns and then the rest are attached out?

Command models: I have 2 French general models on foot (waving your hat in the air I thnk is Napoleonic way of saying SHOOT ME, I'm IMPORTANT!!) then 2 other fancy cavalry commanders waving sabres in the air, then 2 more mounted generals with bicornes, one with map on his saddle, the other pointing forward.

I haven't sorted mine yet, but as to your cannons D, I think they'd likely be 12 pounders and 6 pounders, at least thats what I've seen with a few different Nations.

So it's all 15 or 20 mil? Don't you use 40*40mm for basing so it looks even when you line it all up? I think it's good you plan on using only two horses per base, they can't be cheap to buy more for sure.

40mm x 40mm is for commanders.

All units at a given scale must have the same base "frontage" - so 40mm. 40mm x 30mm is re recommended size bases for 15mm infantry/cavalry/artillery.

I tried 8 men per base and 6 per, and really, I found 8 very dense, and would be impossible to paint after based. I know I could paint them individually and then base them, but I am lazy.

So, I think I will go 6 per stand, and then paint them on base like I do FoW. I read most of the core rules last night, and it even says 6 per base is "acceptable". Then it states 3 cavalry per base, and 1 gun.

Each base represents 300-500 men, or 100-200 Cavalry, or a battery of 8-12 guns. So its all arbitrary. 6 dudes per stand makes the men go alot further for the money, meaning we can play larger scale sooner.

Tonight I will start gluing stuff onto bases so we can try the quick start rules Friday.

Here is a question.. what is the thinking behind commander models on 40 by 40? wouldnt it make more sense to go 40x30 like all other bases???

they mention they should "stand out" on the field. Remember their frontage is the same at 40mm anyways....

3 cavalry per base? That might be a little tight too.

Also I've found the new distributor for the original old glory stuff. Really cheap and it had some pics sent to me, they look good. The only thing is the website doesn't have pics, lame.

I opened one bag of 'Austrian Infantry w/ Shako Advancing' and have assembled most of the first bag. I have another bag of infantry in attack, and a third of skirmishers. The fourth bag is artillery. I have been in contact with Old Glory 15s, whom I believe to be the maker of these models but they have no photos on their site. I received a few photos by email of the Prussian line, but want to see Austrians as well.

With only the first bag I will have 17 bases of line infantry, 13 bases are currently assembled. More to follow each night I hope!

I should note, these 'Old Glory 15s' are almost identical in size to the Blue Moon Napoleonics offered by Old Glory (the company) currently.

Put three horses per base and it looks good. Have eight guns based... tried one infantry stand.. three by two.. and that's how il go. Unfortunately it took just as long to pry six models off their wooden bases and clean them up as it took to assemble a wholu unit of cavalry.. ill do more tonite

My thumbs hurt.

My British infantry is taking shape. It appear my minimum units for line infantry are 8 bases. So I have now based 2 units of 8 stands of line infantry. I also based a unit of light Rifle infantry (6 stands). I plan to start on cavalry tonight.

FD II had the third book Emperors and Eagles, so I grabbed it. It has tonnes of lists, and if I go with the generic french forces, it will work because they are identical to the Triupmh of Nations lists with the exception of the allied units available.. so no Bavarians I guess Smile I'll bring it Friday

The third book is all the 'Early War' lists though D. That's why we didn't bother to grab it at H-Con.

I know that.. but I didnt get any books at Histo, and now was struggling to base my guys the right way. This way, we have all three books amongst us, and I can base my models once and not have to redo it later. Besides, its "early war" yet goes to 1812 for the french and has lots more picture and colour plates.. so no big deal for me.

That's good it has more pics. The only thing the first book disappointed me on was the lack of pics. Sure they had them, but no gallery areas as we've come to expect from GW and FoW.

Note to everyone. Make sure you assemble guys as they'd rank up. My guys are having a hard time ranking up now as they are in 'advancing' stance.

Finally. Old Glory 15s is probably who I will be going with for the rest of my Austrians and all my Prussians. Their models are good and pretty damn cheap for the quality. You just have to email and ask for pics as they don't have many photos on their store. Not sure what shipping will be like. May have to pick them up in the US (Ogdensburg)

Looking on Old Glory 15s - where is the Napoleonics for FoG? All the FoG seem to be ancients?

And if you do an order, let me know - we can share shipping perhaps.

This seems too cheap not to buy into -- though painting will be hair pulling -- but have no idea where to even start.

So put the infantry together today. Holy Christ.. they were on wooden bases and then glued onto metal so it could be transported using magnets.. so it took about 40 minute per stand to just scrape all the wood and old glue off. Seen the underside of the models for the first time... copyright 1976 and 1977.. so it means they are lead lol. BUt I persevered, and I have the starter force rdy out of the PDF. GOnna try and paint my commander tomorrow night maybe, just for kicks.
