EW National Tournament Sep 16
How many of you guys are intending on signing up for the EW Nationals 2 to 4 Sep 16? There is some concern that we're not going to get enough participants this year and therefore we will have to cancel. Those of you that participated in the last Nationals remember we had a discussion at the end of the tournament as to the viability of doing EW. The vast majority said they would participate. Regardless, registration to date has been dismal. Those that definitely are going to participate are asked to sign up soonest.
Cheers.
Cheers.

in,
My 5cents, i think we need to do this event no matter what, just that if we don't have as many people we should find a smaller venue,
Even if we end up at Gary's all sleep on peoples couches..

Agree. If this one fails there will be no future ones.Twinlinked wrote:in,

Re: EW National Tournament Sep 16
I'll be attending.
If you're not interested in opinions and tough choices, stop reading.
What should have happened after the last event is discussion. The discussion about concerns I had brought up regarding the willingness to go down the EW route when the Mid-War Nationals had a drop in attendance. I'm sorry this is happening and I would like very much for a large turnout, as I do with all the events Petawawa and DD run, but when you can't hope to get numbers comparable with the US EW Nationals with half (quarter) of the player base they have.
2015 EW US Nationals 52 Players
2012 EW US Nationals 40 Players
Now let's look at the two big eras for Flames of War
2014 MW US Nationals 83
2013 LW US Nationals 107 (not a typo)
2014 Eastern Canadian Nationals 44 (52 registered) Very respectable turnout!!
2015 Eastern Canadian Nationals 38 (46 registered)
The lessons from last year should have been apparent, a slight drop in numbers, the table/terrain issues that plagued the event. The small clubs we have in this area are not going to be able to support a Nationals without people traveling at GREAT expense to come play six games of Flames of War.
To come back and try to get the numbers with EW is simply not going to happen up here, we just don't have the interest (obviously). Maybe it's not even that, maybe it's the weekend in question that needs revisiting, but I agree with Andrew, you have to push ahead and run the event, change the venue to something smaller based on the numbers you DO have.
If the tournament doesn't run, it'll be a tough sell next year. There are people that will help any way they can to help get this thing going, move it into the Legion in Barrhaven if we have to!

Actually a very thorough discussion did happen immediately after the last tournament and since then we have had a couple of discussions here in Petawawa. The vast majority of folks at the end of the tournament there said they would be back next year and ready to play EW. BF rep indicated that if we wanted to be BF sponsored for a National Tournament, we would have to follow their guidelines on how national tournaments were conducted on a rotational basis. This being our third tournament would mean it would be EW. The table/terrain issues really have nothing to do whether this is an EW, MW or LW. The folks in Petawawa with the support of the Hobby Shop took it upon themselves to put together the tables and I would agree we feel a bit short.
What we need is for folks to commit now so we can get a better feel for numbers. If my info is correct, by this time last year we had 26 committed. Right now we only have I believe 5 or 6. The cut off date is still down the pipe. As to hosting it in another venue, I personally believe that's an option but for the moment booked into the same place we have been for the last two years.

I plan on going. However, as this is my fathers birthday, if some event comes up for him, family has to take precedence. So far I have been able to go the past 2

Just a guess but I think people who expressed interest probably had intent to pick up EW but when push comes to shove they didn't... too bad it probably too tight for people picking up Pacific stuff to get it ready in time.

Re: EW National Tournament Sep 16
In case no one got the word, PW does not qualify for this EW tournament. BF over the next few weeks will be coming out with some clarification (if I understand correctly). Louis Santerre sent an e mail to BF for clarification.
Here's a summary of the response:
" Hi Louis,
As it has always been our policy to leave it up to tournament organisers to allow or disallow what they like in their tournament. After all you are the one putting in the effort to organise and run your tournament. The compatibility between PW points and EW points was never intended for the complete incorporation of the Pacific into Early-war. This note was included for more casual games.
We do have an article organised that lists the equipment in the pacific and makes recommendation on its suitability for early-war, which will be up on the website next week with luck.
A point about your notes on period: Gung-Ho is really covering the US Marine organisations for 1943 to 1945. For 1941 and 1942 we have a separate briefing going up in a couple of months. This covers the earlier organisations and is more suitable for the fighting in 1942.
If you feel you want to allow Gung-Ho forces in your tournament you might consider limiting M7 Priests, Shermans, flame-tanks, and Bazookas, as well as Aircraft rockets and napalm. But once again that is up to you.
I wouldn't even attempt to incorporate the Pacific War books with Mid-war as the points are completely incompatible.
I hope that helps."

Ah ok; I saw the points compatibility note in the Pacific release hype on the Fow website but not that disclaimer. That is rather unfortunate for the viability of that product line.

It's almost as though you'll always have to keep them separate.
