40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Getting this started from the other threads:
"think shooting is very powerful, and moral is brutally effective and destroying units,"

Yeah - I think assaults will also prove to be amazing- we just haven't really had a chance to test it very well. A couple things stand out.
Vehicles are resilient. Rhinos have 12 wounds! Yes, bolters can "wound" them, but not easily. I think Rhino rushes may possible, provided they weather a turn of shooting once in position because you can only disembark BEFORE the transport moves - we'll have to try it.
Sonic weapons are a thing. Negating cover helps to keep the armor modifiers in your favor...speaking of armor saves...
Armor saves are modified by weapons - may times my marines were making saves on 4's and 5's - it's a game opening thing for Xenos players too as it really brings marines in line I think...
Morale- wow! So My 10 man Noise marine unit took 3 casualties - end of the turn(not phase) I take a morale test for the unit, (leadership 8 ) and I roll an 8. All good right? Nope! Here's the rub - you add the count of "models" slain that turn to your roll. So that makes it an 11 - all good right? Noise Marines are fearless right? Nope - you "remove" models equal in number to the amount in which you failed you leadership roll after adding the casualties - so I lose 3 more guys.
But wait! Spare Marines have "And they shall know no fear" right? Yes they do - it now just let's them re-roll that leadership test! Woah...Ask Andrew how that worked on his Terminators! I killed 2, he rolled an 11, re-rolled a 12!! Unit wiped! They are said to have "fled the field". Much more killy game I feel.
Game is very mobile. Units can move and shoot heavy weapons, they just take a -1 to hit penalty. So it encourages you to move around much more. I've ordered the tactical objectives deck, as the game seems to favor unique mission objectives for each player- I really like that idea so I'm keen to try it.
It was nice to push around some old models, but man, I have a ton of work to do the bring all my stuff up to date... Slaanesh also have two entries, the other gods have pages, so I'm unsure what will come of them -- so I have to debate with the idea of starting a clean new faction (waiting on the outcome of Slaanesh) or just start redoing all my Slaanesh. A few more games should help me decide.
Either way, I will play it a few more times for sure, like I did with FoW V4 and see where it takes me.

Re-reading the basic rules - I missed a HUGE benefit:
Assault
Assault weapons fire so rapidly or indiscriminately that they can be shot from the hip as warriors dash forwards
into combat.
A model with an Assault weapon can fire it even if it Advanced earlier that turn. If it does so, you must subtract 1 from any hit rolls made when firing that weapon this turn.
SO! All my sonic weapons have assault options - I could have been running and gunning the whole game... that's massive! Amazing mobility now with infantry.

OMFG!! - Q: There is no datasheet for an Emperor’s Children Sonic Dreadnought – is there a datasheet I should use for this model? A: Use the Helbrute datasheet on page 33 of Index: Chaos. It must replace its keyword with Slaanesh, it must replace its keyword with Emperor’s Children, and it has two additional wargear options; it may take a doom siren, and it may replace its multi-melta with two blastmasters. - replaced in the Index so isn't even Forgeworld - 2 Blasmasters!!! I'm gonna build one!

Started working on some stuff last night. Found an old starter set SM Dread and the [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] from the Sigmar starter set
Cut its tentacles off the one hand, inserting a pair of custom blastermasters etc. So that should allow me to make a pair of Slaanesh Sonic Dreadnaughts!

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Played a game last night against Space Wolves
Was a good game, the mission was the one where infantry pick up an objective, I won but we were down to only a few models each out of 1000 points
Couple notes:
1. In the main book if you take proper formations you get command points, these let you reroll a single dice, and possible change the order that combat is resolved in.
2. Melee is actually quite good, but we have been playing it a bit wrong. Charging units always fight first, after that the active player picks a unit to fight with, then the other player picks one. There is no simultaneous combat like I thought.
3. If you charge and win a combat, and consolidate within 1 inch of your opponent, your opponent can fight you in that phase. So consolidating into combat to avoind snap fire can be risky
Overall, I am really liking this edition so far

Can you clarify? I charge you, my unit goes first, then yours (since chargers go first) -- but of existing combats (from the previous turn) do you mean those combats are alternating initiatives? I pick one to go first on (in my turn) then you pick one to go first on (in my turn) etc?
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
8th introduces "Command Points", which are extra points you gain for adhering to force organisation charts. These can be found at the link below.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Command Points can be spent on Stratagems, which are extra benefits that range from re-rolls (only one per phase; and no single die can be re-rolled more than once), to being able to immediately fight with one of your units (eg. fight with two of your units in a row instead of taking turns activating units during the fight phase).
New army books will provide more stratagems in which your army can use. (eg. the new Space Marine book has three pages of new stratagems).
Also... I actually got one of those Hellbrutes from the Age of Sigmar starter... But it's in Alberta...

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Thanks Kevin, but between the old starter space marine dread and the once I have, two dreads should be enough for now
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Question about the regiments and allies, are their allies first off. The regiment says everyone in that regiment must be the same faction. It says you can mix and match regiments, so i could have a patrol reg and a vanguard reg put together to make my army.
Now can I make the patrol regiment space marines (all factions in the regiment are space marines) then the vanguard regiment as imperial guard (all factions in the regiment being IG only).
I'm just curious because i have some nightlords, not enough to make an army, but enough to make a patrol, just for some flavour.

All units in the formation have to share a "keyword" I believe

So Imperium is a keyword that imp guard and space marines share so they can allie then? I do have some templars laying around as well.
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
I think that is right, they may need to be in different formations though, some formations need to be made up of only units from a specific list,

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
So for example:
If I make an "Imperium" army (in which my whole army consists of units with the keyword "Imperium"
I can take a:
"Patrol Detachment" - Only units from Codex: Space Marines
"Spearhead Detachment" - Only units from Imperial Guard (Astra Militarium)
"Super-Heavy Auxiliary Detachment" - An Imperial Knight
And this would constitute a legal "Battle-forged" Army.
I would not be able to take a detachment with Eldar in the above list due to not having the "Imperium keyword".
Another example would be taking a "Aeladari" (new Eldar word) list in which I could take Craftworld Eldar, Harlequins, and some Dark Eldar units (some do not have the Aeldari keyword), but all in separate detachments.

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
ok, there goes my idea of using my chaos guard with my actual chaos, i guess ill use my night lords as vanilla space marines and ally them that way. because my guard is way to chaos looking to be the good guys.
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Forgeworld came out with their own appendixes a couple weeks after GW did. Their Forgeworld - Forces of the Astra Militarium" appendix has a "Renegades and Heretics" list for chaos imperial guard in it. Interestingly, not in the Chaos appendix...

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Chaos Guard was the Renegades and Heretics list from the "Siege of Vraks" books that Forgeworld did back in the day.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
According to BattleScribe's list builder, it includes things like Leman Russ' and Sentinels, etc. But isn't a complete copy of the Imperial Guard lists, so omits a fair number of entries. You may want to take a look at it yourself before committing.

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
My stuff is already all painted as traitor guard, pulled this pic from a post i did in 2010.
I even have a genestealer magus as my astropath, I'm that old school.
Just need to go threw and wash it make it look old and chaotic. Hide the crappy paint job i did 10+ years ago.
That and take better pics now that i have a better camera.

Honestly, I think everything in that picture is in the Renegades and Heretics Army list.

That is like 1/700th of my total army, i'd have to see the renegades lists but i have a ton of imperial guard stuff. None of the newer things like deathstrike missile.
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Core Rulebook is $59 at OOTB - may pick one up if we keep playing it... its $70 at GW
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Or... we can go in on a starter set together and I'll steal the primaris stuff. The starter comes with a hardback rule book.

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
The starter is a great deal, especially from Dan at OOTB. I picked it up there and sold off the Death guard since I didn't know any of you had any interest in 40k anymore.
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
How much is the starter at OotB?
