Index would cost you 30, and you already have the Marines you need for a basic list..

I don't know about that... The only really saving grace of 40k over the years has been that no matter where you are, you can always find a game of 40k. Heck, most of us haven't been highly active in 40k for years and we still have our old 40k armies.

That's where a lot of the temptation lies

1000 pt game last night - random mission, random deployment, random "Twist" card to spice it up - was a lot of fun!

They did a good job advancing the fluff, I think overall GW has done a great job with this edition,my concern is what the game will look like in a year.. but I'm enjoying it does now

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Sounds good man - Dan at OOTB has a Chaos Codex for me to pick up this week
Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Awesome, sounds like the game is picking up a bit, did they finalize what night they play at OotB?

Not that I know of, but I'll ask Dan this weekend... we can bring our own terrain in, and play anytime they don't already have events..Twinlinked wrote:Awesome, sounds like the game is picking up a bit, did they finalize what night they play at OotB?

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
So, interesting point about modifiers to hit....
The -1 "to hit" modifier is applied AFTER you roll. So for example:
A unit is -1 to be hit and I fire 3 plasma guns, and the rolls some up 2,4,5
The 2 becomes a 1, and if I supercharged - the shooter dies, since it is modified to a 1 after being rolled.
Let's say I have a stratagem that allows the re-roll of ones (seems Space Marines get this easily via HQs). Sticking with supercharged plasma, If I roll a 1, I re-roll it (guy hasn't died yet as I can re-roll), then roll a 2, he will die becomes it "becomes" a 1.
It's interesting, because the tendency to play the "-1 to hit" rule is to just change your BS (say from 3+ to hit to 4+ to hit) but that's not how the actual rule works...its a modifier to the die that is rolled, it does not change your stat...
Food for thought

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
Yeah, I am still not clear on this, it seems a little strange.
A good example I have is Draigo, he allows a unit to reroll all rolls to hit.
So if I have BS 3+ I reroll all 1s and 2s. If one of those models has a heavy weapon and I need a 4 to hit because a 3 becomes a 2, that means I would not be able to reroll a 3 3 rolled by the heavy weapon that moved.
It seems a little strange to me and I am not sure if that is what the rule says/intends. It could make for some heated debates on a crucial roll.
For a command point it won't matter because you can reroll any die, it doesn't matter what the result was.

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
It's simple
It modifies what you rolled - not what you "need to roll to hit"
So if you roll a 3, the -1 makes that 3 a 2. You can then reroll the 2...

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
No I mean the FAQ says reroll are applied before modifiers, so you roll you hit with a 3, so no reroll, then the 3is modified to a 2 so you miss with no reroll,
I will have to see how people are saying it,
You are right though the shot modifies the roll not the BS so plasma cannons just got a bit less good..

Brett/Andrew
You do pay for every single weapon/wargear option. The example of list building in my Index: Chaos shows that Chaos Space Marines have to add the the points for every piece of gear and weapons they have including grenades, etc.
Same with the Rhino, it's 70 points plus 2 for the "included" combi-bolter - totalling 72pts

Re: 40K 8th Edition Thoughts Thread
I was pretty sure that's how it worked, but I'm glad you found an example, I didn't like making the assumption,
Great game last night, I'm still on the fence about the twist cards, I don't like the idea of rules that completely change how armies work.
Also I'm glad you one inspire of my command points keeping Lysander alive for 2 extra turns.. command points seems a little cheesy to me but I guess it removes spikes..

I don't know, command points seem like a fun idea. They mitigate that "anything but a one" aspect of the game. Something interesting out of the space marine codex, is that you can use command points to buy upgrades and increase the number of stratagems available to you. Several of these stratagems require you to build your list around them, which could result in more "fluffy" formations being formed.
